Beth Tweddle: 'Men's team inspired us'

British gymnast Beth Tweddle reveals that the men's team's gymnastics bronze medal inspired the women to their best Olympic result in the post-war era.

British gymnast Beth Tweddle has said that the men's team's gymnastics bronze medal inspired the women to their best Olympic result in the post-war era.

Tweddle, Hannah Whelan, Imogen Cairns, Rebecca Tunney and Jennifer Pinches scored 170.495 to finish sixth - their best result since 1928.

Yesterday, the men's team produced a fantastic display to finish third, 100 years after they last achieved an Olympic medal in 1912.

"The boys went out and smashed it yesterday and they've been on cloud nine ever since. It does inspire us," said Tweddle.

"We came into today knowing the four powerhouses (USA, Russia, Romania, China) would be fighting it out for medals. We finished four tenths behind Canada so we can't be disappointed."

Tweddle, who is competing at her third Olympic Games, revealed that she took advice from her male counterparts.

She continued: "They were really chilled and loved the atmosphere. They said 'use the crowd to your max' and to be honest I think we did."

The 27-year-old had previously said that this would be her last Olympics. She has never won an Olympic gold, but is a three-time world champion.

Tweddle is still to compete in the uneven bars individual event after qualifying first for the final, which will take place on August 6.
