England interim head coach Stuart Lancaster has hailed his side's spirit and courage after a 13-6 win over Scotland in their opening match of the Six Nations.

Three Owen Farrell penalties and Charlie Hodgson's second-half try sealed England the win at Murrayfield in Lancaster's first match in charge.

"It was just a fantastic effort, I'm really chuffed for the boys," he told BBC Sport. "They were the ones who were putting the effort in. It is what teams are built on, spirit, and they showed a tremendous amount of spirit and courage to play for each other and play for England.

"There are lots of things we can improve on but fundamentally it comes down to attitude and working hard for each other. It's all about getting the first win and we need to back it up now."

England travel to Italy on Saturday for their next match in the competition.
