Leicester and Ireland full-back Geordan Murphy announces his retirement from international rugby.

Leicester Tigers and Ireland full-back Geordan Murphy has confirmed his retirement from international rugby.

Murphy made the decision after his omission from Ireland's squad that will tour New Zealand this summer.

The 34-year-old has won 74 caps for his country, in addition to two for the British and Irish Lions, but has since fallen behind the likes of Rob Kearney in the pecking order.

"You know when it's time to hang up your boots at any level," Murphy told the Leicester Mercury.

"It is time for some young lads to come in and prepare for the next World Cup.

"I have had some tremendous memories with the squad."

Murphy played in two World Cups for Ireland, as well as being part of their 2009 Grand Slam-winning side.
