Leinster coach Joe Schmidt is hopeful that Jonny Sexton will commit his future to the club this week.

Leinster coach Joe Schmidt has revealed that "it would be great" if the club could secure the long-term services of fly-half Jonny Sexton in the coming week.

Sexton has reportedly attracted the interest of a host of European sides, with Racing Metro touted as the favourites to sign the Irishman.

However, Leinster are currently negotiating a three-year contract with the 27-year-old and are hopeful that a deal can be agreed this week.

"It would be great for Jonny if it got sorted out in the next week. I just don't think he needs it heading into the Six Nations. I really hope that one way or the other - one way, to be honest - it is sorted. Hopefully it'll play out in the next week or so," Schmidt told reporters.

"It's an IRFU issue and I've got to say they're doing their darnedest to wind it up. We'd love to hold on to him and Ireland would love him to stay in the country as well but I also know Jonny's in demand.

"There will always be big offers for quality players like him. He works very hard, he's skilful and he runs a good game - he is a super player and a super kid."

Sexton has made 34 appearances for his country.
