Warren Gatland praises the character of his Wales team after their 17-10 win over Samoa.

Wales coach Warren Gatland was full of praise for his side after their hard-fought 17-10 World Cup win over Samoa.

Wales trailed at half-time but a crucial try from Shane Williams in the second half turned the match in their favour.

It was the first time that Wales had beaten Samoa in a World Cup match after they lost the last two meetings in 1991 and 1999.

"I thought we showed some great character," said Gatland. "We were under pressure at half-time but the boys dug deep.

"We've worked really hard the last few months and you've got to show people how much it means to us to get out of this and get a W (win) on the board."

Wales continue their World Cup campaign with a Pool D match against Namibia on Monday, September 26.
