Johanna Konta to replace Heather Watson as British number one

Johanna Konta is to be the new British number after surpassing Heather Watson in the WTA world rankings.

Johanna Konta is to be the new British number one after Heather Watson lost her first-round match at the Wuhan Open in China.

Watson was defeated 6-3 2-6 6-3 by Jelena Jankovic, meaning that Konta, who has already progressed to the second round of the competition, will replace her as Britain's number one when the rankings are announced next week.

The 24-year-old has won 19 of her 20 matches since losing to Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in June, including a run to the last 16 of the US Open, and has already defeated world number 17 Andrea Petkovic in China.

Australian-born Konta will take on Victoria Azarenka for a place in the third round of the Wuhan Open tomorrow.
