Serena Williams taking "next week off"

Serena Williams is resting for the next week to ensure that she does not aggravate her elbow injury.

World number one Serena Williams has confirmed that she will rest for the next seven days.

The 33-year-old, who has won all three Grand Slams in 2015, recently confirmed that she would not play at the Swedish Open because of an elbow injury.

Williams has stressed that the complaint will not cause her to spend a lengthy period on the sidelines, but she has decided "to take the next week off" to let the problem heal.

"As much fun as we have been having the past eight or so weeks I have to take some time to let my elbow heal. I am confident it will be ready for the rest of the summer," she wrote on her Facebook page.

"I need some time to recover and rehab it, but as of now I am being forced to take the next week off. Love you all."

Reports have suggested that Williams could return to action at Stanford on August 3.
