The defending champion, who had a bye in the first round, made a quick start to the match, breaking his opponent in the third game of the opening set.

The world number 92 capitalised on a couple of mistakes from the third seed as he tried to get back on level terms, but Murray kept himself ahead with some powerful serving.

Mathieu served well at the start of the second, but the Scot returned well to take a 5-3 lead.

Murray had a chance to wrap up the match in the next game, forcing a couple of errors from his opponent to bring up a match point, but an ace from the Frenchman helped him force the Wimbledon champion to serve it out.

The world number five finished the match with a forehand down the line to wrap up the meeting in under 90 minutes, setting up a third-round meeting with Czech player Radek Stepanek.
