Daria Gavrilova stuns lacklustre Maria Sharapova in Miami

World number two Maria Sharapova crashes to a shock defeat to compatriot Daria Gavrilova at the Miami Open.

Daria Gavrilova has pulled off the biggest result of her career, a 7-6(4) 6-3 victory over world number two Maria Sharapova in the second round of the Miami Open.

Sharapova was far from her best, losing serve four times and struggling with her returns, and was drawn into long rallies by her compatriot throughout the contest.

The opening set was hard-fought and went the distance as neither player managed to capitalise on early breaks, the wildcard edging a tie-breaker after just over an hour of tennis.

Gavrilova stormed into a 4-1 lead in the second set, but appeared in trouble when Sharapova landed a break of her own to make it 4-3, looking odds-on to level things up with her next service game.

However, the underdog dug deep and broke Sharapova to love before serving out the match and pulling off the shock of the tournament so far.
