Mardy Fish laments his fourth Masters Series finals defeat.

Mardy Fish has lamented his 6-2 3-6 6-4 Rogers Cup final defeat to world number one Novak Djokovic.

Speaking after Sunday’s match, Fish revealed that his fourth Masters Series finals loss was hard to swallow.

“It's really hard to get to these spots in the first place,” Fish said. “And I've lost four of them all in three sets. It's really hard to take. I mean, just so much energy mentally and physically goes into going that far. I've never won one. I want it so badly. It hurts."

Djokovic extended his season record to 55-1 after the final and became the first player to win five ATP Masters titles in one season.

“He's overall just so solid,” Fish said of his opponent. “He doesn't miss his second serve returns, puts them deep and kind of puts you on your back foot. You're sort of uncomfortable. He returns so well and puts so much pressure on you.”

American number one Fish, 29, achieved a career-high ranking of world number seven after the defeat in Montreal.
