Former US Open champion Venus Williams has said that Monica Puig is destined for "great things" after her victory over the Puerto Rican in the first round at Flushing Meadows.
Williams opened her campaign with a 6-4 6-7[7] 6-3 victory over her unseeded opponent, as she looks to win a first Grand Slam since 2008.
The two-time champion had lost four match points in her second-set tie-break, and she has paid tribute to Puig for pushing her all the way.
"I give so much credit to my opponent," Venus told reporters. "It seemed like every time I got close, she came up with unbelievable shots.
"She played so well from behind which is a great attribute, so great things for her are coming."
Williams has won seven Grand Slams in her career, with her last victory at Flushing Meadows coming in 2001.
