James Ward: British players "picked their game up"

Britain's James Ward believes that all of the British players competing at this year's Wimbledon have "picked their game up".

James Ward has said that the British players have "picked their game up" after five reached the second round in the singles events at Wimbledon.

Four British men made it into round two of the grass court Grand Slam for the first time in nine years, while Heather Watson progressed in the women's draw.

Ward, who will face Czech player Jiri Vesely in round two tomorrow, told the Evening Standard: "I think everyone has picked their game up. Everyone has been playing well coming into the tournament. Everyone's ranking is improving. It's good to have a few more guys playing well and winning matches.

"I can't speak for anyone else, just myself. You just keep knocking at the door. I've had a few injuries recently and sat at the same ranking for a while. It has been quite frustrating, maybe not getting the results that a lot of you guys expect, and also the expectations I have of myself.

"Sometimes you have got to deal with it and just get ready for when you do have a chance. Thankfully I took it."

At least one of the British players will not be making it to the third round after Liam Broady was beaten in straight sets by 16th seed David Goffin.
