David Ferrer loses to Nicolas Mahut in second round of Wimbledon

Frenchman Nicolas Mahut records a 6-1 6-4 6-3 victory over experienced Spaniard David Ferrer in the second round of Wimbledon.

Nicolas Mahut has claimed the biggest scalp of this year's Wimbledon, eliminating experienced Spaniard David Ferrer in the second round of the competition in London.

France's Mahut overcame number 13 seed Ferrer in straight sets, recording a comfortable 6-1 6-4 6-3 success to breeze into the fourth round in the English capital.

Both players held their opening service games, but Mahut then secured three straight breaks and indeed three holds to take a one-set lead.

Ferrer steadied in the early stages of the second set and broke back after once again losing his serve at the mid-point of the set, but Mahut broke once again at 4-5 to secure the second.

It was a similar story in the third and what proved to be final set as Mahut broke at 1-2, before securing another break at 3-4 to give himself the opportunity to serve out the match in style.

Mahut has now equalled his best ever display at Wimbledon.
