The Minnesota Vikings have confirmed that Josh Freeman will start Monday's match against the New York Giants at quarterback.
Freeman joined the Vikings last week shortly after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers having made an unconvincing start to the season.
Despite being with the team for less than two weeks, head coach Leslie Frazier has chosen to give the 25-year-old a chance ahead of fellow quarterbacks Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel.
"Our anticipation is he will play well," Frazier told reporters.
Ponder will act as the back-up quarterback for the match against the winless Giants having recovered from a rib injury, with Cassel being demoted to third choice despite playing in their last two games.
