Thomas Helmer backs his former club Bayern Munich to win both home and away against Arsenal in their Champions League last-16 tie.

Former Bayern Munich defender Thomas Helmer has backed the Bavarian giants to defeat Arsenal over two legs in the Champions League last 16.

The 47-year-old believes that Arsene Wenger's side are "never dangerous" and will lose to Bayern both in London and in Munich.

"That should not be a problem," he told TZ. "Arsenal always play well but they are never dangerous. I would not be surprised if Bayern not only win their home tie, but also the away game in London.

"At the moment you have to say Bayern are playing well in every competition. The coach [Jupp Heynckes] is doing everything right, the mood in the team is superb, does the game system - and they have no injuries.

"So once again it rests on Bayern Munich to defend the honour of the German clubs in Europe after the weak Europa League results this week."

The first leg of the last-16 tie is at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
