Aston Villa reportedly hold an interest in signing Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa have reportedly identified Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha as a January transfer target.

Last month, Unai Emery started work with the Premier League outfit having accepted the chance to leave Villarreal for the West Midlands.

The Spaniard has made a strong start to life at Villa Park, recording victories over Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion to move the club away the relegation zone.

However, the club's owners hold a desire to become established in the top half of the Premier League as soon as possible after only finishing in 14th spot in 2021-22.

That will see Emery being provided with funds to make significant changes, should he so wish, at the turn of the year in a bid to further improve the club's fortunes.

According to Relevo, Villa are contemplating whether to try to tempt Cunha into a move away from Wanda Metropolitano.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto says that Emery is a long-term admirer of the player, who has struggled for game time during his time at Atletico.

The 23-year-old has made just two starts in La Liga and the Champions League this campaign, a further 14 outings coming from the substitutes' bench.

Cunha was far more active and productive last season, chipping in with six goals and six assists from 29 appearances in Spain's top flight.

The Brazil international still has over three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Atletico, leaving club officials in a strong position when it comes to negotiating his future.

However, having exited the Champions League and missed out on Europa League football, it is feasible that Atletico may have to make cutbacks in January.

Cunha is capable of playing in any role in the final third, although Villa are well stocked in that area with Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendia and Philippe Coutinho having all made contributions over the past 18 months.

With the latter yet to play under Emery due to injury, it is unclear where Coutinho currently stands having not chipped in with a goal or assist in 13 outings this campaign.
