Former Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon explains why he turned down the chance to move to Barcelona and opted for Serie B side Parma instead.

Former Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has opened up about why he rejected a move to Barcelona and opted to rejoin Parma this summer.

The 43-year-old graduated from Parma's academy in 1994 before earning a move to Italian giants Juve in a deal worth £52m in 2001, and across his two spells with the Old Lady he has made 685 appearances.

However, his contract in Turin will expire next week and the veteran keeper has decided to return to his boyhood club despite their relegation from Serie A to Serie B last season.

During his press conference when he joined Parma, Buffon explained why he turned down Spanish giants Barca: "I had two big offers, but I didn't want to be a substitute again. I was tired of being the second choice.

"I did it at Juventus because of the link I have with the club, but to be honest I didn't want to do it again, not like the last two years. I had other interesting offers, even from teams in the Champions League, but the emotional implication [with Parma] made my mind up.

"That emotion is the only way to keep playing at a high level. I knew Parma could give me something no other team would. I am happy with the affection shown to me. I feel at home. I love it here."

Buffon only made 14 appearances for Andrea Pirlo's side last season but is determined to continue his long-standing career as a number one.
