Basel 1-0 Bayern Munich

A late goal from Valentin Stocker earns Basel a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at St. Jakob-Park.

A late goal from Valentin Stocker has earned Basel a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at St. Jakob-Park.

Franck Ribery came close to giving Bayern the lead after ten minutes, but his shot was well saved by Yann Sommer in the Basel goal.

The hosts were unlucky not to go ahead minutes later when Aleksandar Dragovic's header was tipped onto the post by Manuel Neuer before seeing the ball roll along the goalline.

They hit the woodwork again before the end of the half when Alexander Frei's powerful drive came back off the bar.

Philipp Lahm had a decent sight of goal after the break, but his shot was eventually collected by Sommer.

The keeper came to his side's rescue again soon after when he managed to keep out Mario Gomez's effort.

The deadlock was broken with four minutes to play as substitute Stocker lashed in across the goal.
