How Chelsea could line up with Ben Chilwell

Sports Mole looks at how Chelsea could line up next season if they sign Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell.

While the majority of Premier League clubs will have to rethink their strategy for the next transfer window, Chelsea are one of a few teams who could be active in the market.

After the sale of Eden Hazard and minimal incomings over the past two windows, the Blues have the funds to make a number of high-profile additions.

With one of Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri likely to leave Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have been linked with an approach for Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell.

Although the England international possesses a long-term contract at the King Power Stadium, it remains to be seen whether the Foxes will change their stance regarding player sales as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at how the 23-year-old could fit into the Chelsea starting lineup.

CHEXI with Ben Chilwell

Realistically, Chilwell will be provided with an immediate chance on the left-hand side of the backline if Chelsea are willing to pay big money in a restricted market.

More often than not, Lampard has worked with a four-man defence, and Chilwell would expect to be deployed in his familiar position of left-back.

However, he also has the attributes to fit seamlessly into a left wing-back role, although Alonso may be given priority if he remains at the club, having flourished there this season.

With regards to the rest of the starting lineup, Lampard could begin to ease Cesar Azpilicueta out of a regular starting place, instead showing preference to the younger and more attack-minded Reece James.

Despite Billy Gilmour's recent emergence, N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic may get the nod in midfield, especially if Jorginho is allowed to return to Italy.

Further forward, Hakim Ziyech will seemingly act as a like-for-like replacement for Willian on the right flank after signing from Ajax.

As it stands, Christian Pulisic is higher in the pecking order than Callum Hudson-Odoi, meaning that the United States international is a likely starter on the left when everyone is fit.
