San Jose Earthquakes 5-3 DC United

Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart both score twice for San Jose in a 5-3 victory over DC United.

A breathtaking match in California ends with eight goals as San Jose beat DC United 5-3 at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The game's attacking style was clear from the opening minutes and the first goal came in the eighth minute.

It was the visitors who made the breakthrough as Dwayne De Rosario found space on the edge of the box before curling his shot into the top corner.

San Jose were almost level just five minutes later but Steven Lenhart's header clipped the crossbar from close range.

The home side turned the match on its head in the space of two minutes as Lenhart rifled his shot home from the edge of the box to level the encounter.

Chris Wondolowski put San Jose ahead in the 21st minute as the striker reacted quickly to a loose ball in the area to slot past Joe Willis.

Justin Morrow extended San Jose's lead in the 31st minute when he found space in the area from a corner before converting his shot past a stranded Willis.

The second period started slowly but DC United gave themselves a lifeline in the 64th minute when defender Daniel Woolard met Andy Najar's cross with a powerful header to make it 3-2.

Woolard's goal was cancelled out just moments later when Wondolowski grabbed his second of the game with an accurate header past Willis.

Lenhart matched Wondolowski's achievement five minutes later as he found space in the box before converting calmly.

As an enthralling game drew to a conclusion, substitute Hamdi Salihi made the score slightly less embarrassing when he controlled De Rosario's through pass before calmly finishing past Jon Busch.
