Roberto Martinez: 'John Stones could captain England'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes that defender John Stones could be a future captain of England.

Roberto Martinez has said that John Stones could be a future England captain following his performance in Everton's goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

The defender handed in a transfer request earlier this week amid speculation that he could join Chelsea, which was rejected by the Toffees.

After securing a point at White Hart Lane, the manager told BBC Sport: "He was under a lot of pressure, so his performance was that of someone who has the potential to become an England captain. He shows incredible composure and you would never say he's only 21-years-old.

"He accepts he is an Everton player. We want to be a winning team and John is a big part of that. We have our own ambitions and project and John is a big part of that. He showed a really strong face against Tottenham."

Stones joined Everton from Barsnley in 2013.
