Lazio captain Stefano Mauri's ban increased to nine months

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri's ban for alleged match-fixing is increased to nine months after the player's appeal was turned down.

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri has had his ban for alleged match-fixing increased from six to nine months after an unsuccessful appeal.

Mauri was suspended by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in August after the prosecutor's investigation into Lazio's league meetings with Genoa and Lecce in 2011 showed that he had failed to report knowledge of match-fixing in the Lecce encounter.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who has been seeking to clear his name under the club he has played for since 2006, had the appeal turned down on Wednesday night which now leaves him out for the entire season.

Lazio are currently sixth in Serie A and travel to face Trabzonspor in the Europa League tomorrow evening.
