Manchester United are reportedly considering former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar in their search for a director of football.

Chief executive Ed Woodward is eager to appoint a director of football before identifying the club's next permanent manager as part of a long-term restructuring plan at Old Trafford.

RB Leipzig's Paul Mitchell is understood to be one of the frontrunners for the job, although United are concerned that it will be difficult to prise him away from the German outfit.

The Red Devils are therefore considering other options, and the Manchester Evening News reports that Van der Sar is one of the candidates on their radar.

Van der Sar is currently the CEO at Ajax, having been promoted to that position from his previous job as the marketing director in 2016.

The 48-year-old spent six years as a player with United from 2005 to 2011, making 266 appearances for the club across all competitions and helping them to four Premier League titles, the 2008 Champions League and the League Cup in the process.
