Manchester United are reportedly set to pip Arsenal to the signature of Velez Sarsfield starlet Thiago Almada.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in South America and has been tipped to complete a move to a top European club since the summer.
Almada has previously confirmed that he would be open to signing for Leeds United and work under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa, but it appears that United are set to fend off stiff interest to win the race for his signature.
According to Todofichajes, talks between Velez Sarsfield and United are progressing well and a £23m deal could be completed in January.
The report claims that Arsenal were also keeping a close eye on developments, but the Gunners' limited budget proved to be a stumbling block in their pursuit of Almada.
The Argentine playmaker has notched up 12 goals in 51 appearances for Velez Sarsfield in all competitions, as well as bagging four assists for the Primera Division side.
