Rafael da Silva criticises Manchester United for transfer mistakes

Former defender Rafael da Silva claims that Manchester United have made a lot of 'expensive mistakes' in the transfer market over the past decade.

Former defender Rafael da Silva has criticised Manchester United for making a number of 'expensive mistakes' in the transfer market.

While United have won the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League in recent years, the North-West giants have not lifted the Premier League trophy since 2013.

Brazilian full-back Rafael has claimed that club officials are to blame for signing players who possessed 'the wrong character' to enjoy a positive career at Old Trafford.

Speaking to ESPN, Rafael said: "It has taken too long to get back on track. It's been seven years. We did some things wrong. We started signing expensive players and giving them a lot of money.

"I don't agree with that. Just because a player costs £150m does not mean he's good for the team. It depends on the character of the player."

Rafael, who is now at Lyon, made 169 appearances for United between 2008 and 2015.
