Successor to FIFA president Sepp Blatter to be elected on December 16?

Sepp Blatter's successor as FIFA president is reportedly expected to be elected on December 16 following the 79-year-old's decision to step down last week.

FIFA could have a new president in place by December as football's world governing body is reportedly leaning towards holding a new election in six months' time.

Current president Sepp Blatter stepped down from his role last week, just four days after he was re-elected for a fifth term.

The Swiss figure's decision to call an end to his 17-year reign came after the US authorities arrested seven football officials on allegations of bribery, money laundering and racketeering.

Overall, 14 people were indicted for allegedly paying or accepting bribes worth more than $100m (£65m) from the 1990s to the present day.

According to BBC Sport, FIFA is likely to hold an emergency meeting on December 16, when all 209 member associations will vote for a new president at the body's headquarters in Switzerland.

Prince Ali, who conceded defeat to Blatter in last month's election, is one of the candidates expected to stand for the presidency later this year.

A final decision on the election date is expected to be made in July.
