James Ward-Prowse: 'We need to take our chances'

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse admits that his side paid for missing their opportunities in their narrow defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has admitted that his side have to learn to take their chances to get back to form in the Premier League.

The Saints have now lost their last four matches following their defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday as Ronald Koeman's men were to rue missed opportunities, including when Dusan Tadic saw his second-half penalty saved by Tom Heaton.

Ward-Prowse, who made his return from a two-month layoff in Lancashire, told the club's official website: "The manager said to us at the end you've got to take those sort of chances. When the game's got to be killed you've got to go and kill it which unfortunately we didn't do, but we've got another game to come to rectify the result today.

"It was quite difficult, but we knew that before the game and there's no excuses as we were prepared for that, we knew they'd come out fighting and look to outwork us and we knew we needed to do that first - win the battle, and I felt we were in control, but the penalty miss gave them the momentum to go on.

"We saw this as a real winnable game for us and a game to get back on track with, but unfortunately we couldn't do that today. The beauty of the Christmas period is that there's another game around the corner to go again and get back from today which is what we're looking to do."

Koeman's side are now fifth in the Premier League, two points behind the Champions League spots.
