Gary Speed said that his family "mean everything" to him in his last interview before his tragic death at the weekend.

The late Gary Speed hailed the importance of his family in his last ever interview.

The 42-year-old, who is believed to have committed suicide at his home in Cheshire on Sunday morning, revealed that he 'cherished' his next of kin over all of his football success.

"The item I cherish the most isn't material," Speed said in a FourFourTwo interview. "I don't even know where my Leeds championship medal is. So I'd say family - we're an item and they mean everything to me."

The ex-Newcastle United midfielder added: "Football breaks your heart all the time."

A full inquest into the sudden death of the former Wales manager is expected to go ahead on January 30.
