Roger Federer has suffered a straight-sets defeat to world number 15 Dominic Thiem in round three of the Italian Open.
The Swiss lost 7-6(2) 6-4 in Rome in a match that saw the 17-time Grand Slam winner make 34 unforced errors in total.

Federer, who has been suffering with a back injury this week, was edged out in a tie-break in the opening set after both players lost serve early on.
Thiem did not look back after gaining a foothold in the match, holding serve throughout the second set to see off his world number two opponent just 10 days from the French Open.
One of Richard Gasquet or Kei Nishikori, who face off on Thursday afternoon in the Italian capital, awaits Thiem in the quarter-finals of the competition.
