The 31-year-old, who remains at the crease on 224, has become the first person in the history of Test cricket to secure four double centuries in a calendar year.

South Africa struggled in the morning session as David Warner and Michael Hussey secured individual tons to put the Aussies in strong contention for the second Test.

The Proteas were able to dismiss Rob Quiney for a duck but the visitors were unable to remain consistent and allowed Australia to finish the day on 482-5.
