Arsenal and Bayern Munich both missed a penalty in the first half of their Champions League last-16 first-leg clash at the Emirates Stadium, while Wojciech Szczesny was also sent off in a dramatic 45 minutes.
Bayern were agonisingly close to making the best possible start when Toni Kroos targeted the top corner from outside the box but Szczesny reacted well to tip the ball over.
The visiting goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, was then forced into action to palm away a low effort from Yaya Sanogo, who had lost his marker inside the box.

Arsenal were then gifted the opportunity to take the lead in the ninth minute when Jerome Boateng tripped Mesut Ozil inside the penalty area.
However, the chance was missed as Neuer stayed on his feet for long enough to push Ozil's penalty to safety.

Bayern started to dominate possession as the first half progressed but didn't find it as easy to break down a stubborn Arsenal defence.
A second penalty was awarded before the break when Szczesny rushed off his line to foul Arjen Robben and Arsenal were dealt a further blow as their goalkeeper was shown a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
David Alaba stepped up from 12 yards but he failed to take full advantage, clipping the outside of the post after sending Lukasz Fabianski the wrong way as the first half ended with the game still goalless.
