Mikel Arteta reportedly withdraws from the race to become Arsenal's new manager, leaving the vacancy open for Unai Emery.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly walked away from the chance to become the next Arsenal manager.

Widespread reports have emerged claiming that former Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery has been selected by the club's board to replace Arsene Wenger.

According to Sky Sports News, Arteta, who was thought to be a leading candidate, has withdrawn himself from contention, leaving Emery as the number one choice.

Arteta spent five years playing for the Gunners before retiring in 2016 to join Pep Guardiola's backroom staff at Manchester City.

Emery was sacked by PSG earlier this month, despite guiding the club to the Ligue 1 title, but the team's failure to progress far in the Champions League was his downfall.
