Mikel Arteta backs Arsenal for greatness

Mikel Arteta says that Arsenal stand on the brink of 'achieving something important' in the 2015-16 campaign.

Mikel Arteta has said that there is a belief flowing through the Arsenal squad that they can "achieve something important" this season.

The FA Cup winners warmed up for next week's Community Shield clash with Premier League champions Chelsea by lifting the Emirates Cup on Sunday.

Theo Walcott scored the only goal as the Gunners beat Wolfsburg 1-0 to win the trophy yesterday, having obliterated Lyon 6-0 on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger's side are 11 years without a league title, and are yet to win the Champions League in their history, but Arteta believes that he and his teammates stand on the cusp of something major.

"We have been together a while now and we have this belief now that we are capable of achieving something important," he told the club's official website.

"It took some time to build this cohesion, this momentum.

"I think the crowd is feeling much closer to the team at the moment and together we can make it."

Wenger's men kick off the new league season by hosting West Ham United on August 9.
