Jack Wilshere says that he was "only messing" when claiming on Twitter that he was going to bet on Arsenal's Champions League match against Olympiakos.

Jack Wilshere has been forced to deny that he bet money on Arsenal's match against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The midfielder raised concerns on Twitter when it appeared that he was planning to place a bet on his club's chances of defeating Olympiakos, despite any form of wagering being against UEFA rules.

The 19-year-old tweeted before the Gunners' 3-1 defeat to the Greek side: "Champions league tonight come on the Arsenal! @Frimpong26AFC 1st goal is 150-1... worth a cheeky £10 right?"

The England international later responded to teammate Emmanuel Frimprong's shot, which hit the side netting, by tweeting: "Frimmy nearly won me some money there!"

Wilshere has now deleted the messages and posted: "I didn't actually bet on the game. I know we're not allowed to! I was only messing #justtobeclear"

UEFA have banned any form of betting, stating that it could potentially "damage the integrity" of games.

"All persons bound by UEFA's rules must refrain from any behaviour that could damage the integrity of matches and competitions," The Mirror quotes a spokesman from the governing body as saying. "A breach of these principles is committed by anyone who participates directly or indirectly in betting or who has a financial interest in such activities."

Meanwhile, Arsenal and fellow London side Chelsea are the only English teams in the final 16 of the Champions League.
