Aston Villa have been drawn against League Two side Notts County in the second round of the League Cup, while Newcastle United will welcome Northampton Town at St James' Park.
The game at Villa Park means that highly-rated winger Jack Grealish could line up against the club where he made his league debut.
Grealish's loan spell at Meadow Lane in 2013-14 was widely credited for helping to keep the Magpies in League One that season.
Meanwhile, Steve McClaren's new charges will take on the Cobblers, also in League Two, as they look to mount a serious push for the trophy, while Sunderland face Exeter City at the Stadium of Light.
Everton have been drawn to face Barnsley, which could see Mason Holgate line up against his former club, while Crystal Palace have been handed a home draw against Shrewsbury Town.
The second-round fixtures will be played in the week commencing August 24.
