The 34-year-old's previous deal with the Catalan giants expired at the end of June, meaning that he is currently a free agent and unable to start the 2021-22 campaign for Ronald Koeman's side.
There have been suggestions that the Argentina international has agreed a new five-year deal, with a pay cut, but there has still not been an announcement from Barcelona.
According to Mundo Deportivo, only the finer details of the agreement need to be addressed, and the La Liga outfit are hopeful of making an official statement on the attacker on Thursday.
The report claims that the club are desperate for the deal to be signed ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy fixture against Juventus on Sunday evening.
Messi, who attempted to leave Camp Nou on a free transfer last year, scored 38 goals in 47 outings at club level last term before helping his country win this summer's Copa America.
