Barnsley boss David Flitcroft reveals that his players are "raring to go" ahead of Saturday's Championship opener against Wigan Athletic.

Barnsley manager David Flitcroft has revealed that his players are "raring to go" ahead of this weekend's Championship opener against Wigan Athletic.

The Tykes, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, start the new campaign on Saturday when they host the Latics at Oakwell.

"We are all very excited about the new season," Sky Sports News quotes Flitcroft as saying.

"We showed tremendous strength of character to stay up in dramatic circumstances last season and I was proud of all the lads who contributed, but we don't want to be having to endure those sorts of nerves again.

"We have strengthened the squad and the players are raring to go. Individually and collectively we have worked hard to be ready. I'm very pleased with the fitness of the players."

Flitcroft took temporary charge of Barnsley during last season before being handed the role permanently.
