Sports Mole looks ahead to Wigan Athletic's first match under Owen Coyle's leadership - a Championship opener against Barnsley at Oakwell.

Owen Coyle will begin his tenure at Wigan Athletic with a trip to Oakwell this afternoon, as the Latics take on Barnsley in their opening Championship fixture.

Summer signings Grant Holt, Marc-Antoine Fortune, James Perch and Leon Barnett are all in contention for a first Wigan start, but Thomas Rogne is likely to miss out with a back injury.

Callum McManaman is unlikely to feature as he continues to recover from an ankle problem, while Honduras defender Juan Carlos Garcia could go straight into the side after getting a work permit on Wednesday.

Barnsley will be without Kelvin Etuhu and Paul Digby through hamstring and calf injuries respectively, while new recruits Jean Yves Mvoto and Lewis Nyatanga are both chasing a starting spot.

Tykes boss David Flitcroft could also pick Dale Jennings in his starting XI.

Possible lineups:

Barnsley: Steele, Cranie, Nyatanga, Kennedy, Wiseman, Golbourne, Perkins, Dawson, Mellis, Dagnall, O'Grady

Wigan: Carson, Boyce, Perch, Carlos Garcia, Crainey, Maloney, McCarthy, McCarthur, Mcmanaman, Fortune, Holt

Sports Mole says: 1-3
