Steve Cotterill ready for Birmingham City challenge

Birmingham City boss Steve Cotterill says that he is only interested in coaching the players available to him, as he attempts to lift his new side up the table.

Steve Cotterill has admitted that he has not set any targets for Birmingham City beyond getting the club out of Championship relegation danger.

The Blues find themselves inside the dropzone after losing seven and drawing two of their first 11 games, most recently going down 6-1 to Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Cotterill has been brought in to replace experienced boss Harry Redknapp, who was heavily backed by the club's owners during the summer, only for a run of six successive defeats to cost him his job.

Speaking at his unveiling on Monday afternoon, the former Brum coach said: "First and foremost this dressing room needs to breathe a little bit and find out who is where and who is doing what. The answer is not always bringing players in, bringing players in and bringing players in. Sometimes the answer is coach them.

"If they can't do what you want them to do then maybe go to the chairman and say can we go and purchase this player. Getting ourselves out of the relegation zone is our immediate task. Nothing has been told to me what I need to do or expectations on me. They'll know my type of character."

Cotterill was appointed as part of Redknapp's backroom staff for the closing stages of last season, helping to keep the Blues in the division with two wins from the final three games, before departing during the summer.
