Marinus Dijkhuizen begins Brentford reign with win over Farense

Brentford get off to a winning start under new manager Marinus Dijkhuizen courtesy of a 3-0 pre-season victory over SC Farense of Portugal.

Brentford have eased to a 3-0 victory over Portuguese side SC Farense to get new manager Marinus Dijkhuizen off to a winning start at the club.

It was the visitors who began the brighter of the two teams in their opening pre-season fixture, and they had the first shot on target seven minutes into the match when Konstantin Kerschbaumer drew a smart stop from Ricardo in the Farense goal.

Clear openings were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes, but the Bees broke the deadlock right on the stroke of half time when Jota and Moses Odubajo combined on the right flank to find Jermaine Udumaga, who turned the cross home.

Brentford should have doubled their advantage five minutes after the break when Andre Gray latched on to a Marcos Tebar pass and rounded the keeper, only for Hugo Ventosa to get back and make a goal-saving block.

The visitors continued to push for a second goal, and some persistent work from Gray almost supplied it when he forced a goalkeeping error, but Alan Judge couldn't find the unguarded net from 40 yards out.

Despite having the better of the chances throughout, Dijkhuizen's side were inches away from being pegged back when the hosts struck the crossbar.

However, they gave themselves a cushion with just under 15 minutes remaining when Farense were slow to react to a quick Brentford free kick, allowing Gray to escape his marker and hammer an effort past the keeper.

The Bees then capped off an encouraging start to pre-season with a third goal right at the death as Jonathan Douglas tucked home a rebound after Gray's initial shot had been saved.
