Lucas Joao strikes late in Sheffield Wednesday win

Lucas Joao scores in the final minute as Sheffield Wednesday beat Brentford 2-1 at Griffin Park.

Lucas Joao's 90th-minute goal has given 10-man Sheffield Wednesday a dramatic victory against 10-man Brentford.

Atdhe Nuhiu almost gave the visitors an early lead at Griffin Park after he managed to send his header goalwards, but his effort lacked the power to beat David Button before the Brentford stopper was called into action again to keep out Ross Wallace's drive.

Nuhiu thought that he had given his side the lead midway through the first period when Wallace produced a tantalising cross, which he headed against the crossbar.

Button had to be alert again soon after as he kept out a fierce strike from Marco Matias as Wednesday looked to break the deadlock.

The Owls' inability to score was nearly punished after Jake Bidwell's looping effort for the hosts struck the woodwork late in the half.

However, Wednesday were given a penalty after Nuhiu was bundled over by James Tarkowski, who earned a red card for his challenge.

The away side, who beat Newcastle United in midweek, duly edged ahead before the interval as Nuhiu slotted his spot kick past Button.

Brentford tried to bring themselves back on level terms as Marco Djuricin's header struck the crossbar, although the Austrian frontman was in an offside position.

The Bees hit the woodwork again on 56 minutes as Alan Judge's cross evaded everyone before bouncing back off the post.

With 14 minutes left, Bidwell took aim at the Wednesday goal, only to be denied by Keiron Westwood.

However, the Londoners finally levelled after a route-one clearance from Button found Judge, who curled his effort beyond the reach of Westwood.

The Owls were then reduced to 10 men in the latter stages after Jeremy Helan was given a second yellow card for his challenge on Sergi Canos.

Despite letting their lead slip, Wednesday snatched victory in the final minute as Jack O'Connell's failure to deal with a long ball allowed Joao to race in on goal before he slotted past an onrushing Button.
