Joey Barton: 'No rush over new Burnley contract'

Burnley midfielder Joey Barton insists that he is in no rush to sign a new contract at the club, and first wants to focus on securing the Championship title.

Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has insisted that he is in no rush to sign a new contract with the club.

The 33-year-old's current deal at Turf Moor runs out at the end of this season, but he revealed that he has already been offered an extension for next year.

However, having now achieved the primary goal of securing automatic promotion back to the Premier League, Barton first wants to focus on winning the title before discussing his own future.

"I've spoken to the club and they offered me a contract six to eight weeks ago. For me, at this stage it's not about finances - it's about where I see myself," he told talkSPORT.

"I didn't want to negotiate because we've had a title to win and that's been the main aim. I didn't want anything to come between that. Once the dust has settled - we still hope to win the title - there will be plenty of time to sit down and get that sorted.

"The club know where I am on it. I'm absolutely delighted with the season I've had, delighted with my teammates, really humbled to be a part of it and hopefully we can sort something out and make it continue in the Premier League."

Burnley will win the Championship title if they beat Charlton Athletic on the final day of the season this weekend.
