Nicky Maynard strike downs Wigan Athletic

Nicky Maynard scores in the second half to give Cardiff City a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic in their Championship match.

Cardiff City have moved up to second in the Championship table following a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the Cardiff City stadium.

Aron Gunnarsson came close for the hosts inside the opening two minutes, but he saw his effort kept out by Scott Carson.

The visitors were next to threaten when Callum McManaman's header from Andrew Taylor's cross was saved by David Marshall.

Nicky Maynard had another chance for Cardiff near the end of the first half, but he could only head wide from a corner.

In the final minute of the half Tom Adeyemi saw his long-range strike pushed away by Carson, as the two teams went into the break level.

Cardiff started the second half strongly and took the lead in the 53rd minute when Maynard slotted home from Kenwyne Jones's header.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser, but they could not find the net as Cardiff maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
