Celtic win Scottish League Cup with victory over Dundee United in final

Celtic lift the Scottish League Cup for the 15th time in their history following a 2-0 victory over Dundee United.

Celtic ended a six-year Scottish League Cup trophy drought by recording a 2-0 victory over Dundee United in this afternoon's final at Hampden Park.

Goals in either half from Kris Commons and James Forrest were enough to seal the triumph for Celtic, who have now won the competition 15 times.

The opening exchanges were dominated by Ronny Deila's men, with both Virgil van Dijk and Leigh Griffiths going close in the first nine minutes.

While the duo failed to take either of their chances, Commons made no such mistake in the 28th minute. United goalkeeper Radoslaw Cierzniak turned his initial effort onto the post, but the former Nottingham Forest and Derby County winger was on hand to tuck in the rebound from close range.

The Bhoys continued to control proceedings as the second half got underway and their cause was helped in the 55th minute when United skipper Sean Dillon was shown a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Celtic full-back Emilio Izaguirre.

From that moment onwards, it was one-way traffic as Celtic seemingly created goalscoring opportunities at will.

Stefan Johansen went close when his flicked effort from a Griffiths cross clipped the outside of the post, but it was substitute Forrest that made sure of the outcome 11 minutes from time.

The young winger was picked out on the edge of the area by Johansen, and from there he was able to fire a shot beyond the reach of Cierzniak.

The encounter would end on somewhat of a sour note for Forrest on a personal level, though. With four minutes remaining, he failed to convert from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Paul Dixon.

Ultimately it counted for little as Celtic saw out the remaining moments with minimal fuss to win Deila's first trophy since the Norwegian took charge of the club last summer.
