Guus Hiddink: 'Diego Costa was not fit'

Guus Hiddink concedes that it was a gamble to start the unfit Diego Costa during Chelsea's Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea's interim manager Guus Hiddink has revealed that he knew Diego Costa was "not totally fit" prior to tonight's Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

The frontman started the contest at Stamford Bridge and he drew the Blues level at one goal apiece, but a second-half strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic secured the win and a place in the quarter-finals for the Parisians.

Costa limped off with a hamstring problem on the hour mark, and Hiddink conceded that it was a risk to play the Spaniard.

"We knew he was not totally fit but he desperately wanted to play and scored a beautiful goal," he told BT Sport.

With regards to the game, Hiddink stated that his players had shown their French counterparts too much respect during the opening exchanges.

"We gave too much respect in the first 10 minutes, they were dominating," he added.

"They are a good side but once we stepped up we had some chances."

Chelsea have now been knocked out of the Champions League by PSG in each of the last two seasons.
