Chelsea launch investigation into an alleged 'monkey gesture' made by a supporter during the Blues' League Cup victory over Manchester United.

Chelsea have confirmed that they are launching an investigation into an apparent 'racist gesture' made by a supporter during last night's win over Manchester United in the fourth round of the League Cup.

The supporter in question is believed to have made a monkey gesture during the clash at Stamford Bridge, which ended 5-3 to Chelsea after extra time.

The Champions League winners released a statement, which said: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm we are investigating an incident involving a member of the crowd at last night's game against Manchester United.

"The club will be examining all available footage and asks anyone who can identify the individual to contact the club. Chelsea FC is committed to removing all forms of discrimination and if we have sufficient evidence we will take the strongest possible action, including supporting criminal prosecution."

Reports have claimed that the photograph of the fan at the centre of the alleged racist gesture has been made aware to the police but a formal complaint has not yet been made.
