Former referee Graham Poll has revealed that match official Mark Clattenburg feels "angry and confused" after being accused of racially abusing Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.

The 37-year-old is under a police investigation regarding comments made to Mikel, which are alleged to have contained a racial element.

Clattenburg is also at the centre of a probe by the Football Association after Chelsea complained to the Premier League, accusing the referee of using "inappropriate language" towards Mikel and Juan Mata.

"I know he's feeling angry because he doesn't feel he's done anything wrong," Poll told talkSPORT. "He's angry and confused.

"He's angry because he's being accused of something he doesn't feel he did, and confused because, in his mind, he's done nothing wrong and yet ended up as the victim."

Reports have claimed that Clattenburg called Mikel a "monkey" and referred to Mata as a "Spanish twat" during Chelsea's 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.
