Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich 'driving force behind Kai Havertz deal'

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is said to have been 'the driving force' behind the Blues completing the transfer of Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich reportedly played an influential role in the deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz.

After a prolonged period of speculation, the Blues announced the arrival of the Germany international on a long-term contract on Friday evening.

The 21-year-old becomes the latest star name to move to Stamford Bridge, joining the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Thiago Silva.

However, according to The Express, it was Abramovich who pushed the hardest when it came to finalising a deal.

While Frank Lampard was supportive of the acquisition, the report suggests that Abramovich wanted to capitalise on having less competition for the player's signature.

Havertz has moved to Stamford Bridge for a fee in the region of £72m, plus add-ons.
