Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele returns to his former club as a Young Player Technical Mentor ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has completed a return to Stamford Bridge to become the club's new Young Player Technical Mentor ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Makelele joined Chelsea in 2003 and became a household name among supporters, making 217 appearances and somewhat revolutionising how the defensive midfield position was perceived in the Premier League.

The 46-year-old was previously manager of KAS Eupen, where he retains an ambassadorial role.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about the return to Stamford Bridge, Makelele emphasised his desire to work closely with the club's academy talents.

"This club gave me a lot and now I want to give back and help the young Chelsea players dreaming of a career in football," he said.

"I want to use all my experience to help them become professionals in every aspect and I am looking forward to getting started."

Makelele's role at Chelsea will entail speeding up the process of youngsters becoming ready for first-team action - something especially important next season due to the club's transfer ban.

The Frenchman will also coordinate outgoing loan moves and advise players on finding clubs which would best suit their progression.
