Report: Frank Lampard to join New York City

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard reportedly agrees to join New York City on a free transfer when his current contract expires this summer.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has agreed to join new MLS franchise New York City on a free transfer, according to reports.

Lampard is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer and admitted that he could leave the club, having been included on the Premier League's list of released players.

The 35-year-old had been linked with a reunion with Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers, a move that he was reportedly willing to make.

However, he is understood to have met with New York City's head coach Jason Kreis today before agreeing a deal to join the newly-formed team, which will enter the MLS next March.

Lampard is expected to be joined by Atletico Madrid striker David Villa, who reportedly underwent a medical with the team today.

The England international, who has been included in Roy Hodgson's squad for the World Cup this summer, is Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer having found the net 211 times in 648 matches.
